Sendai Kousei Hospital
A next-generation advanced hospital that serves as the core of new urban development
Basic Policy
Under the basic policy of "selection and concentration," Sendai Kousei Hospital specializes in three fields: cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive diseases, providing advanced specialized treatment for the entire Tohoku region and 24-hour regional emergency medical care. It boasts nationwide renown, particularly for cardiovascular catheterization procedures.
Anticipating future needs, the hospital planned to relocate to the former site of Tohoku University's Faculty of Agriculture, which is approximately three times the size of the existing hospital, and we were in charge of the design.
Under the concept of a "next-generation advanced hospital in harmony with the City of Trees," it was designed to integrate and harmonize with the surrounding urban development in the historic Kamisugi district of Sendai City.
Facility Planning: Ward Planning with All Private Rooms
As its most distinctive feature, all rooms in the general ward are private, enhancing infection control and ensuring patient privacy.
Apartment buildings and commercial facilities are planned adjacent to the site, and this hospital will serve as the center of a new urban development through the collaboration of medical care, commerce, and housing.
The exterior design features calm, brown-based earth tones that harmonize with the historic environment of the project site. The base exterior is finished with scratch tiles, while the ward's exterior walls feature a double-skin structure with installed louvers, giving the facade a rich texture and ensuring harmony with the surrounding landscape.
The waiting hall on the first floor is a space bathed in soft light reminiscent of the scenery of the Sendai Tanabata Festival. The outpatient hall on the second floor, which serves as the general outpatient area, features a sign system designed to be easy for visitors to understand.
The ward, featuring all private rooms, adopts an H-shaped layout with two nursing units per floor, positioning patient rooms around the central staff station to shorten the observation flowlines for patients. Sub-stations serving as nursing work spaces are provided at the ends. Additionally, the first floor is planned with a bouldering space and a squash court as staff amenity spaces, and a childcare facility is planned on the site, taking into consideration a worker-friendly environment for healthcare professionals.
Preparation for the future
To accommodate future changes, a large parking lot is planned on the site, secured as space for future expansions or complete rebuilding. In addition, as space for near-future development and expansion, an uncommitted "iPS Area" is planned on each floor from the first to the fourth. Currently used as meeting rooms and the like, these will become spaces capable of transforming like iPS cells to match future advancements in medical science.
