"Symbiotic Ring Area" — The form of symbiosis born between the earth and the city

In modern cities, the ground is covered with pavement, which impedes the circulation of water and organic matter and hinders nature's metabolism. We redefine the environmental and social spaces created by the interconnected "gaps" between buildings as the "Circulatory Commons," creating margins where the cycles of nature and human activity overlap.

Three Methods for Generating a Co-ringed Space

Peel off:

Strip away the city's surface, regenerate healthy soil with a high carbon storage capacity utilizing fallen leaves (litter), and create the starting point for the ecosystem.

● "To save" / "To accumulate" / "To collect":

By not relying solely on massive reservoirs and instead decentralizing locations to "store water in smaller amounts," the resilience of cities against climate change, such as torrential rain, is enhanced.

- Connect:

We will reconstruct the circulation structure of the entire city by networking scattered gaps and "connecting" them to serve as biological migration routes and pedestrian spaces.

Construction of a "multi-layered environmental network" through co-circular domains

● Connection between architecture and the earth:

Instead of viewing architecture as a standalone entity, it is redefined as a "small earth" opened up to the environment through rainwater and greenery, generating circulation that transcends the site boundaries.

● Utilizing urban gaps:

We will reframe "margins" such as alleys and vacant lots as "seedbeds" that nurture circulation, and promote environmental regeneration on an urban scale.

●Connection method:

In the "sym-ring domain," we combine "passive" connections that accept the bounty of nature with "active" connections that actively utilize environmental resources, thereby building the optimal form of symbiosis for cities.

"Kokan-iki" is an initiative to transform cities from a "growth model" to a sustainable "maturation model."
